Intolerable Cruelty was one of the first films I watched, not long after I'd become a fan of Geoffrey, with the sole intention of seeing Rush's performance - and nothing more. And after what I'd been used to - the cool and calculating presence of Walsingham, and the daring and cunning of the pirate Barbossa - this clean-shaven, brash Australian character came as quite a culture shock! Saying that, I found it incredible just how much Geoffrey managed to fit in to this small cameo part, and if you ever want a showcase for the wide range of expressions and emotions Rush is capable of churning out in rapid succession, then watching the first scene of this film is all you need. Swinging from cheerful and laid back to puzzled, angry and finally a little crazy, Geoffrey's screentime as Donovan Donaly is all too short, but it is perhaps one of his most memorable performances.
The film itself is worth a watch to while a couple of hours away, though it certainly isn't the kind of film I go out of my way to see, and isn't one I plan on watching regularly. It has its fair share of humourous moments at least, and even if George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones are no Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, they do the film enough justice with their solid leading performances.
