Description: Though the Marquis de Sade is not a sentimental
character, I think one can see by the end of the film that, despite everything,
he had been very much in love with the chambermaid, Madeleine - and she fond
of him in return. This is a tribute to their rather innocent relationship amidst
a world of perversion, madness and hypocrisy.
