Ephraim

Film: Munich
Genre: Fact-Based Drama, Thriller
Year: 2005

Steven Spielberg's Munich is a two-and-a-half hour long thriller inspired by real events. Avner Kaufmen (Eric Bana) takes centre stage as the man hired to lead the Israeli retaliation against the implementors of the Munich massacre at the 1972 Munich olympics where 11 Israeli atheletes were killed. Geoffrey plays the role of case officer Ephraim, a minor but significant part in what became one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2005.

I found Munich a gruelling film to sit through. It requires the utmost in concentration for one to truly understand what is going on, and because my attention floundered at times, I didn't get the fullest from my first viewing. However, the message it transmits is a strong one and one is shown a bleak picture of our world where violence is only ever counteracted with more violence, and that this circle of revenge never truly ends. Rush's Ephraim struck me as a cold and practical man who clearly took pride in his nationality and in the attempts to kill those responsible for the Munich massacre. Geoffrey plays him with a sinister edge, which counter-balanced his unnoteworthy appearance and seemingly friendly manner. As always, he gives the quality cast an added boost by his small but substantial contribution to the film.
