Film: Ned Kelly
Genre: History, Drama
Year: 2003
The story of Ned Kelly has been immortalised as the stuff of legend in the years since the man's death and he is one of Australia's most prominent historical figures, so it is little wonder that Geoffrey took on a role in this film adaptation of the tale, starring alongside Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom. Though by comparison Geoffrey's part is very small, and he gets very little opportunity to demonstrate his skill, he still adds a touch of class to the film and delivers a performance that, similarily to Francis Walsingham, is neither in the realms of black or white.
Francis Hare is made out to be the best-of-the-best in the police force, and Geoffrey gives the man an aura to match merely by adopting a confident walk, a proud stature, and a steady voice. There is no fear in his eyes, only determination, and even in the line of fire, he does not back down until absolutely necessary. Perhaps Geoffrey's voice lets him down during the shoot-out, where a deeper baritone might have had more impact, but otherwise his stint as Hare is yet another smooth performance to add to his list. (And he's one of the few actors who can make one of those grand Victorian beards look good!)
