Film: Les Misérables
Genre: History, Drama
Year: 1998
Geoffrey landed the role of Inspector Javert in the 1998 movie Les Misérables, which is based on the Victor Hugo novel. Set during the unstable era of the French Revolution, Javert is a man who becomes utterly obsessed with hunting a petty thief, Valjean, a former criminal trying to put his past behind him. Playing the part cooly and without that overblown villainy that some cinematic "bad guys" get, Rush manages to convey to us a pathetic figure of a man who's life revolves around pursuing and destroying one person who has, in truth, done very little wrong and already paid enough for his crimes.
Les Misérables is a well-shot and well-paced film which rests, for the most part, on the shoulders of Liam Neeson as Valjean, but in which Geoffrey plays his part well. His Javert is suitably unimposing and polite, and yet there is still a very unnerving aura about him which is as tangible to those that he encounters on-screen as to the audience that is watching him - a clear nod to Geoffrey's subtle acting skill.
