Film: The Banger Sisters
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Year: 2002
The Banger Sisters is the only ever so-called "chick flick" that I've voluntarily sat and watched, and I'm glad of it, too. It's a light-hearted and often tittilating comedy-drama about a pair of former groupies who are reunited after two decades, only to find that they've grown very much apart. The cast is headed by Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon, and Geoffrey fits nicely in the middle in what is perhaps his most adorable role. Playing the love-deprived, eccentric would-be writer, Harry Plummer, Geoffrey manages to instil real heart and emotion into a role that could easily have become mere caricature.
Harry Plummer gets a lift to Phoenix with the brassy, carefree Susette (Hawn), unaware of just how much of an impact she is to have on his life. Through the course of the film, Harry ends his ten year stand of having no sex and comes to terms with the so-called "curse" he believes his now-deceased father has laid upon him, emerging at the end of the film as a changed man, filled to the brim with ideas for his writing, and quite besotted with his lady friend. Geoffrey's performance is filled with countless humorous mannerisms and one gets the impression that he thoroughly enjoyed himself with this character, bringing a lot of his own ideas to the role, and even adding his own props!
Despite the fact this film is a comedy, it still has a strong message to promote to its audience - that one should always be true to oneself - and Geoffrey's unique and lively performance adds to those of Sarandon and Hawn, and makes The Banger Sisters into a thoroughly enjoyable movie. Without a doubt, Plummer is one of my favourite of Rush's onscreen characters.
